📋Editorial transparency: Our team tests hosting providers independently. Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you click and purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never influences our ratings or recommendations.

Hosting.com (formerly A2 Hosting) and HostGator are two of the most recognizable names in shared hosting — both affordable, both widely recommended, and both targeting similar audiences. But after testing them head-to-head in 2026, the differences are more significant than most comparisons let on. In this article I’ll break down performance, pricing, features, support, and security so you can make the right call for your site.

How I Tested and Selected

I tested both providers over several weeks using real hosted sites, GTmetrix performance audits, and live support interactions. I evaluated five core areas: pricing and plan value, real-world performance, features included out of the box, support quality, and ease of use. I also factored in security tooling, data center options, and long-term cost once introductory pricing expires.

Note on Hosting.com's Rebrand

Hosting.com was previously known as A2 Hosting. The rebrand is largely cosmetic — the hosting infrastructure, plans, and team remain the same. Any reference you see to “A2 Hosting” in older reviews is the same provider covered here.

✓ Pros
  • ✓Significantly faster load times in GTmetrix testing (1.1s fully loaded)
  • ✓20+ global data center locations to choose from at signup
  • ✓Stronger built-in security: Patchman, ConfigServer Firewall, 2FA, Cloudflare
  • ✓More developer-friendly: Git, Node.js, PostgreSQL, PHP 8.4 support
  • ✓WordPress staging, auto-updates, and pre-installation included
  • ✓Turbo Server option for up to 20x faster page loading
✗ Cons
  • ✗No phone support — live chat and tickets only
  • ✗Weekly backups on entry plans (daily only on higher tiers)
  • ✗Renewal prices climb significantly after the intro term
  • ✗Ticket support response can be slow — up to 26 hours in my testing

In my GTmetrix tests, a site hosted on Hosting.com loaded fully in 1.1 seconds and reached time-to-interactive in just 1.0 second. That is a dramatic difference compared to most shared hosts. The Total Blocking Time measured just 56ms, which tells you the server is handling scripts efficiently rather than stacking delays.

What separates Hosting.com from competitors at this price point is the security stack. Rather than charging extra for DDoS protection or malware scanning, you get Patchman (automated vulnerability patching), ConfigServer Firewall, ModSecurity WAF, and Cloudflare CDN included. Two-factor authentication protects your account. This level of security is typically reserved for managed WordPress plans costing 3x more.

For WordPress users specifically, Hosting.com’s environment is well-optimized. WordPress can be pre-installed at signup, staging is included, and if you step up to the Turbo tier you get LiteSpeed caching for a further speed boost. I cover this in more detail in my full Hosting.com review.

#2 HostGator — Best for Budget Buyers Who Want Phone Support

HostGator

🏷️ 73% off — from $4.50/mo

* Introductory price. Renewal rates apply. 30-day money-back guarantee.

✓ Pros
  • ✓Daily automated backups included on most shared plans
  • ✓Phone support available 24/7 — a genuine differentiator
  • ✓Clean, beginner-friendly cPanel interface
  • ✓Unmetered bandwidth with no fair-use concerns
  • ✓Solid uptime in my monitoring — 99.9%+ over two months
✗ Cons
  • ✗Performance lagged in my testing — 12.5s fully loaded vs 1.1s for Hosting.com
  • ✗Security features are mostly add-on paid upgrades (SiteLock, CodeGuard)
  • ✗U.S.-only data centers — relies on Cloudflare CDN for global reach
  • ✗No phone support for cancellations or billing in some regions
  • ✗Owned by Newfold Digital — same parent company as Bluehost and Web.com

HostGator’s strongest suit is accessibility. The cPanel interface is clean and well-organized, the 1-click WordPress installer works smoothly, and the phone support line is genuinely useful when you need an answer in real time. In my own live chat test, I was connected to an agent in under 30 seconds and received a specific, accurate answer.

Daily backups are a meaningful advantage for non-technical users who don’t want to manage their own backup routines. HostGator includes this as standard — something Hosting.com only offers on higher-tier plans.

That said, the performance results were disappointing. My GTmetrix test recorded a 12.5-second fully loaded time on a test site, compared to 1.1 seconds for Hosting.com. Even accounting for test variability, the gap is large enough to matter for search rankings and user experience.

⚠️

Ownership Disclosure

HostGator is owned by Newfold Digital, the same parent company behind Bluehost and Web.com. This is worth knowing when evaluating long-term support quality and product direction.

Performance: Hosting.com Wins by a Wide Margin

This is the category where the two providers separate most clearly. In my GTmetrix testing:

Hosting.com recorded a fully loaded time of 1.1 seconds, a time-to-interactive of 1.0 second, and a Total Blocking Time of just 56ms — performance scores that rival many managed WordPress platforms.

HostGator recorded a fully loaded time of 12.5 seconds and a Total Blocking Time of 623ms on the same benchmark setup. Even the LCP, which HostGator handled reasonably at 671ms, was overshadowed by the overall page weight and script delays.

Testing Methodology

Performance data sourced from GTmetrix tests run on live hosted sites under equivalent conditions. Uptime monitored independently via UptimeRobot over a four-week window. Both providers achieved 99.9%+ uptime during the test period.

Both hosts offer 99.9% uptime guarantees, and both delivered on it during my monitoring window. Uptime is not where they differ — page speed is.

If SEO performance and visitor retention matter to you, Hosting.com’s speed advantage is significant. Google’s Core Web Vitals use metrics like LCP and TBT directly in ranking signals. A 12.5-second load time will hurt your search visibility and bounce rate far more than any on-page optimization can recover.

Watch the Renewal Price

Hosting.com’s intro rates are among the lowest in the industry, but renewal prices are substantially higher. Lock in the longest billing cycle available — a 3-year term gives you the best value per month and delays the renewal rate as long as possible.

HostGator Renewal Rates

HostGator’s introductory prices are competitive, but renewal rates are roughly double. The Baby plan is the best value if you plan to run more than one website — the extra $0.75/mo over Hatchling removes the single-site limit entirely.

On entry-level pricing, Hosting.com starts lower at $2.99/mo versus HostGator at $4.50/mo. HostGator compensates with unmetered storage and daily backups on all plans — both features Hosting.com restricts to higher tiers. The right pick depends on what you prioritize: lower cost per month (Hosting.com) or more generous resource limits at that entry tier (HostGator).

Security: Hosting.com Has More Built In

Both hosts provide free SSL and DDoS protection as a baseline. From there, Hosting.com pulls well ahead.

Hosting.com includes Patchman, a tool that automatically scans for outdated software, patches known vulnerabilities, and quarantines infected files — without you needing to do anything. It also includes ConfigServer Firewall (CSF), ModSecurity WAF, Cloudflare integration, and two-factor authentication on the account level.

HostGator’s security beyond the basics is largely paid add-on territory. Daily malware scanning requires SiteLock (extra cost), and advanced backup automation requires CodeGuard (extra cost). What comes in the box is functional but minimal compared to Hosting.com’s out-of-the-box stack.

Support: HostGator Wins on Channels, Hosting.com Wins on Live Chat

Support is the one category where HostGator holds a clear advantage: phone support. For users who need to speak to a human being during a crisis, that phone line is a real differentiator. Hosting.com offers no phone support at all.

In my live chat test with HostGator, I was connected in under 30 seconds and received a specific, technically accurate response within a few minutes. The agent confirmed VPS requirements for a Laravel/Redis setup rather than trying to upsell me on a shared plan — a good sign of quality.

Hosting.com’s live chat (accessed through the dashboard) was also fast — under a minute to connect — and the agent was helpful. The problem is ticket support, which in my testing took 26 hours to return a response. For non-urgent queries that’s acceptable, but it’s not where you want to be during an outage.

⚠️

Hosting.com Ticket Support

If you rely on ticket-based support for anything time-sensitive, be aware that response times can exceed 24 hours. Use the live chat in the dashboard for faster help.

✅

HostGator Live Chat

In my testing, HostGator’s live chat connected in under 30 seconds with a knowledgeable agent. If phone access is important to you, HostGator is the only option between these two.

Ease of Use: Both Are Beginner-Friendly

Both providers use cPanel, which makes management familiar for anyone who has used shared hosting before. WordPress installation is 1-click on both platforms via Softaculous.

HostGator’s customer portal is clean and minimal, with quick access to key areas like domains, SSL, email, and cPanel. The design is simple and unlikely to confuse beginners.

Hosting.com’s portal felt slightly more modern in my testing — the dashboard updates dynamically without full-page reloads, and the VPS management panel includes useful tools like a browser-based console, one-click OS reinstall, and an encrypted credentials vault. For anyone managing multiple sites or a VPS, these details genuinely matter.

Server Locations: Hosting.com Is the Obvious Winner

Hosting.com lets you choose your data center at signup from 20+ global locations, including Dallas (US), Toronto (CA), London (UK), Frankfurt (DE), Singapore (SG), Sydney (AU), Mumbai (IN), and Mexico City (MX). Picking a server close to your audience reduces latency and improves TTFB for organic visitors without CDN assistance.

HostGator operates primarily from U.S.-based data centers (Provo, Utah and Atlanta, Georgia). You cannot choose your server location at signup, and HostGator assigns it automatically. For global audiences, they recommend Cloudflare CDN as the workaround, which helps — but hosting your origin server in the right region is still better than relying entirely on CDN caching.

[sh_divider]

Who Should Use Hosting.com?

Hosting.com is the right choice if:

You want the fastest possible shared hosting performance at an affordable price — the speed gap between these two providers is significant and will affect your search rankings and bounce rate.

You have an international audience and want to host close to your users with a real data center choice rather than relying on CDN edge nodes.

You’re building on WordPress and want staging, auto-updates, and security scanning included without upgrading to expensive managed hosting.

You’re a developer who needs Git, Node.js, PostgreSQL, or SSH access on a shared plan without moving to a VPS.

Who Should Use HostGator?

HostGator is the right choice if:

You need phone support and want to be able to call a human being when something breaks. Hosting.com has no phone line — this is a real limitation for some users.

You want daily automated backups included on every plan, including the entry tier, without having to upgrade.

You’re running a simple site with U.S.-based visitors and performance is less of a priority than ease of management and low entry cost.

Best Alternatives to Consider

If neither Hosting.com nor HostGator feels like the right fit, here are three alternatives worth looking at:

[sh_ranking title="Top Alternatives for 2026" subtitle="If neither provider fits your needs"]
[sh_rank pos="1" brand="SiteGround" logo="https://simonhosting.com/wp-content/uploads/siteground-logo.png" url="/go/siteground/" score="9.4" desc="Best for WordPress — fastest TTFB tested, excellent support, built-in CDN and caching" btn="Try SiteGround"]
[sh_rank pos="2" brand="Hostinger" logo="https://simonhosting.com/wp-content/uploads/hostinger-logo.png" url="/go/hostinger/" score="9.2" desc="Best budget pick — lowest price in the market with solid performance and a great interface" btn="Try Hostinger"]
[sh_rank pos="3" brand="ScalaHosting" logo="https://simonhosting.com/wp-content/uploads/scalahosting-logo.png" url="/go/scalahosting/" score="9.8" desc="Best overall — independently owned, top-tier performance and support, managed VPS at shared prices" btn="Try ScalaHosting"]
[/sh_ranking]

If WordPress performance is your primary concern, SiteGround is the provider I recommend above all others at this price point. If pure budget is the constraint, Hostinger undercuts both Hosting.com and HostGator on intro price while posting strong speed results. And if you want the best shared hosting available regardless of brand recognition, ScalaHosting consistently tops my testing across performance, support, and value.

[sh_divider]

Final Verdict

[sh_callout type="tip" title="Bottom Line"]Hosting.com is the better overall hosting provider in this comparison — faster performance, stronger built-in security, more global flexibility, and a more developer-friendly environment at a competitive price. HostGator earns its place as a solid backup option if you need phone support or want daily backups on an entry-tier plan, but the performance gap is hard to justify for most new sites in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hosting.com better than HostGator?

ℹ️

For most users, yes. Hosting.com delivers significantly faster page load times in independent testing, more global server options, and a stronger built-in security stack. HostGator has advantages in phone support and daily backups on entry plans, but for speed-critical sites Hosting.com is the better choice.

What happened to A2 Hosting — is it now Hosting.com?

ℹ️

Yes. A2 Hosting rebranded to Hosting.com in 2024. The change is cosmetic — the infrastructure, plans, and team are the same. All existing A2 Hosting reviews and comparisons you find online refer to the same provider now operating as Hosting.com.

Which is cheaper: Hosting.com or HostGator?

ℹ️

Hosting.com starts lower at $2.99/mo versus HostGator’s $4.50/mo on intro pricing. However, HostGator includes unmetered storage and daily backups at every tier, while Hosting.com reserves those features for higher plans. Always compare what’s included, not just the headline price.

Does HostGator have better support than Hosting.com?

ℹ️

HostGator has more support channels — including phone support, which Hosting.com does not offer. In my live chat testing both were responsive, but Hosting.com’s ticket support was slow (up to 26 hours). If phone access is important to you, HostGator is the better option.

Which is better for WordPress: Hosting.com or HostGator?

✅

Hosting.com is the stronger WordPress host. It includes staging, auto-updates, pre-installation, and LiteSpeed caching on Turbo plans — features typically reserved for managed WordPress hosts. HostGator offers 1-click WordPress installation but lacks staging and performance optimization at this price point.

Are there better alternatives to both Hosting.com and HostGator?

💡

Yes. For WordPress performance, SiteGround is the top pick at a comparable price. For pure budget, Hostinger is cheaper than both. If you want the best overall shared hosting experience, ScalaHosting leads my rankings — see the best web hosting roundup for the full comparison.
