InterServer posted 100% uptime, a 0.395s Speed Index, and a 9ms P95 response time under load in our tests, and it backs that with a rare price-lock offer. Check renewal terms, inode limits, and VPS management scope before you order.

$5/mo Price Lock
Visit InterServer

This InterServer review covers what matters before you pay: measured performance, what each plan really costs after the first term, and where the fine print bites. InterServer has been in business since 1999 and sells almost everything, from $2.50 shared hosting to $3 VPS slices and dedicated servers. That range is useful, but it also means the official pages do not always agree with each other.

We monitored a test site with Grafana for two weeks, ran a page speed test, and put the server under a 50-user stress test. The results were among the strongest we have recorded. Below, I break down those numbers, the pricing details that catch buyers out, the WordPress setup, support, and who should choose InterServer over hosts like SiteGround or ScalaHosting.

InterServer Overview

InterServer is a US hosting company founded in 1999 by Mike Lavrik and John Quaglieri. Unlike many budget hosts that only sell shared plans, it covers the full ladder: shared hosting, Windows ASP.NET hosting, reseller hosting, Linux and Windows VPS, storage VPS, dedicated servers, private email, and colocation.

Fast Shared Hosting With a Real Upgrade Path

In our testing, InterServer kept a site online for 14 straight days and answered 95% of requests within 9ms while 50 virtual users hit it at once. Shared plans start at $2.50/mo for the first term, a dedicated $5/mo Price Lock campaign keeps that rate fixed while you stay on the plan, and Linux VPS slices start at $3/mo when you outgrow shared hosting.

See InterServer Plans →

That breadth is the main reason to look at InterServer. A small site can start on shared hosting, move to Boost when it needs more CPU and memory, and then step up to a VPS or dedicated server without changing providers. For developers and agencies, that continuity saves migrations and keeps billing in one place.

InterServer at a glance

  • Founded: 1999, by Mike Lavrik and John Quaglieri
  • Shared hosting control panels: DirectAdmin (Standard) or cPanel
  • Entry price: $2.50/mo first term, or $5/mo through the Price Lock campaign
  • VPS locations: NYC metro area (including Secaucus, New Jersey), Dallas, and Los Angeles
  • Uptime guarantee: 99.9% monthly network availability
  • Refund window: 30 days on eligible shared packages (Standard, Windows, Boost, WordPress)
  • Support channels advertised: 24/7 phone, live chat, and tickets

The main weakness is not the hosting itself but the paperwork. Several official pages contradict each other on pricing, plan limits, and the Price Lock guarantee. I flag each of those conflicts below so you know exactly what to confirm at checkout.

InterServer Performance Testing Results

InterServer advertises a 99.9% uptime guarantee, SSD caching, LiteSpeed, CloudLinux, Cloudflare CDN integration, and servers that are not overloaded. Marketing claims are easy to make, so we measured how a real test site behaved.

ℹ️

How We Tested

We used Grafana to monitor uptime and server response times on our InterServer test site over a two-week period, and to run a stress test with 50 simultaneous virtual users. The page speed test and stress test took place on the same day. Hostinger and SiteGround figures below come from our own comparison tests. Results reflect one test site under the conditions described and may differ for your site, plan, and traffic.

Guaranteed Uptime (SLA)

InterServer uptime and response time

InterServer says it relies on Cloudflare’s global network to help keep sites available. During our two-week monitoring window, the test site recorded 100% uptime with no outages detected.

That is a clean result, but two weeks is a short window. A single outage next month would not have shown up here, so I treat this as strong early evidence rather than proof of long-term reliability. If you host something mission-critical, run your own monitoring with a free tool such as UptimeRobot during the 30-day refund period.

InterServer speed

InterServer credits its speed to servers that are not overloaded and a route-optimized network. Our page speed test produced a Speed Index of 0.395 seconds, which means the visible content of the page appeared almost immediately.

For context, Hostinger recorded a Speed Index of more than 3.5 seconds in our comparison tests. InterServer’s result is among the strongest we have measured. Speed Index depends heavily on the page being tested, theme weight, caching, and where the test runs from, so your own numbers will vary.

InterServer stress testing

To see how InterServer handles a traffic spike, we simulated 50 users visiting the site simultaneously. The server completed the test with:

  • Zero HTTP failures
  • A P95 response time of 9 milliseconds, meaning 95% of requests got a response within 9ms
  • More than 14,000 requests handled in total
  • About 48 requests per second on average

In the same type of test, SiteGround handled about 37 requests per second and more than 11,000 requests in total, also with zero HTTP failures, but with a P95 response time of 311 milliseconds. InterServer delivered higher throughput and much faster responses under this load.

⚠️

What These Results Do Not Prove

Fifty simultaneous users is a meaningful spike for a small site, but it is not a stress test for a busy WooCommerce store. Cached pages are much easier to serve than checkout, search, or logged-in sessions. Our results show how InterServer performed under the conditions tested, not how every plan or site will perform at higher traffic.

What the InterServer SLA actually covers

InterServer’s service level agreement guarantees 99.9% monthly network availability, excluding scheduled maintenance. Mathematically, that allows roughly 43 minutes of downtime in a 30-day month. A few details are worth knowing:

  • The guarantee covers network availability, not every application running on your server.
  • Credits are assessed case by case and capped at 50% of the base monthly fee.
  • You must open a trouble ticket within seven days, and InterServer’s own monitoring must confirm the outage.
  • A separate power guarantee exists, with its own exclusions.

That is a fairly standard SLA. Our 100% measured uptime beat it comfortably, but the SLA itself is not a reason to choose InterServer over competitors.

Server locations

InterServer’s published VPS locations are the NYC metro area (including Secaucus, New Jersey), Dallas, and Los Angeles. If most of your visitors are in North America, that footprint is fine. If your audience is in Europe or Asia, Cloudflare can serve cached content closer to visitors, but dynamic requests still travel back to a US origin. For a primarily European or Asian audience, I would look at a host with servers in your region first.

  • ✓0.395s Speed Index in our page speed test, far ahead of Hostinger’s 3.5s+
  • ✓9ms P95 response time and zero failures with 50 simultaneous users
  • ✓$5/mo Price Lock campaign keeps the rate fixed while you stay on the plan
  • ✓Clear upgrade path from shared to Boost, VPS, and dedicated servers

  • ✗VPS plans have no refund, and managed support starts only at 8 slices ($24/mo)
  • ✗Server locations are US-only
  • ✗Official pages contradict each other on prices, limits, and the Price Lock

InterServer Pricing and Plans

InterServer’s pricing is genuinely low, but it is also where buyers get confused. There are three different ways to buy shared hosting, each with different renewal behavior. All prices below were checked on October 5, 2026, in US dollars, and exclude domains, taxes, and add-ons.

⚠️

Watch the Renewal Price

The introductory rate applies only to the first term. Check the current renewal rate and billing commitment before purchasing.

The real first-year cost

The $2.50 headline hides an important detail: it applies to the first billing term only, and longer terms are paid upfront.

Billing OptionStandard (DirectAdmin)cPanel Shared
1 month, then renews monthly$2.50, then $7/mo$2.50, then $8/mo
First 12 months on monthly billing$79.50$90.50
12-month term upfront$30$30
12-month renewal$84/yr$96/yr
24-month term upfront$60Not listed
24-month renewal$168 per 2 yearsNot listed

If you pick monthly billing, your first year on Standard costs $79.50, not $30. The annual term is the better deal for year one, but year two renews at $84.

How the Price Lock differs

The Price Lock is a separate campaign advertising $5/mo for life. According to InterServer, the rate applies to eligible hosting accounts ordered through that campaign and does not change while the account stays on the plan. Domains, add-ons, upgrades, taxes, and other services can cost extra.

This is why it is my recommended way to buy InterServer shared hosting. Over two years, $5/mo comes to $120, while the Standard annual route costs $30 plus an $84 renewal, or $114. From year three onward the Price Lock is clearly cheaper, and you never face a surprise renewal jump.

🚫

Confirm the Price Lock at Checkout

InterServer’s Standard technical reference page still mentions a Price Lock Guarantee, while the main Standard page shows higher renewal prices. Not every InterServer account gets $5 lifetime pricing. Order through the Price Lock campaign and confirm the terms on your checkout page before paying.

Boost plans: more power without managing a server

Boost is InterServer’s upgrade for shared accounts that keep hitting resource limits. You get more CPU, memory, I/O, and inodes while InterServer still manages the platform.

SpecBoost 2Boost 4Boost X
Advertised monthly price$9.95$19.95$69.95

Inodes800,0001,200,0003,200,000

Boost is still shared hosting, so those allocations are not dedicated physical hardware. At Boost X pricing, compare carefully against a managed VPS.

VPS pricing

InterServer’s Linux VPS is sold in slices, starting at $3 per slice per month, up to 32 slices. These are some of the cheapest VPS entry prices I have seen from an established host.

SlicesPriceCPU CoresRAMSSDTransfer
1 slice$3/mo12GB40GB2TB
2 slices$6/mo14GB80GB4TB
4 slices$12/mo28GB160GB8TB

16 slices$48/mo832GB640GB32TB
32 slices$96/mo1664GB1,280GB64TB

Note that two slices still list a single CPU core, so adding a slice does not always add a core. The grid also lists a shared 10Gbps port, which is shared connectivity, not guaranteed throughput per VPS.

⚠️

VPS Fine Print

VPS billing is monthly only, with no quarterly or annual discounts, and VPS plans have no trial or money-back guarantee. Managed support is included only at 8 slices or more, which starts at $24/mo. Control panel licenses such as cPanel are billed on top of the slice price.

Other InterServer plans

  • Windows VPS: Hyper-V with Remote Desktop access, from $10/mo for 2 slices (1 core, 4GB RAM, 80GB SSD, 4TB transfer) up to $160/mo for 32 slices.
  • Storage VPS: from $3/mo for 1TB of SATA storage, up to 32TB for $96/mo. It is built for backups and archives, not database-heavy apps, and it does not run backups for you.
  • Windows ASP.NET hosting: $8/mo with Plesk, 25 websites, ASP.NET, .NET Core, Classic ASP, SQL Server, and MySQL. An older package listing says unlimited websites, so confirm the limit.
  • Reseller hosting: from $19.95/mo (RS One: 80GB storage, 500GB bandwidth, 20 cPanel accounts) to $69.95/mo (RS Five). The DirectAdmin version allows unlimited client accounts within package resources. No setup fees.
  • Dedicated servers: listing examples range from about $40/mo to $142/mo depending on hardware, location, and stock.
  • Private email: from $2.50/mo for the first 12 months; the renewal rate was not clearly shown.
  • Domains: $7.99 registration or transfer offer with hosting, while the domain catalog lists .com at $15. There is no universal free domain.

Refunds and cancellation

Eligible shared packages (Standard, Windows, Boost, and WordPress) come with a 30-day refund period. VPS, licenses, dedicated servers, colocation, and IP transit are not covered once service starts. All services renew automatically, and you need to cancel at least three days before the renewal date.

InterServer also offers free Standard hosting for verified 501(c)(3) nonprofits (with a Powered by InterServer link) and one free year of student hosting for eligible school email addresses.

What unlimited really means

InterServer’s terms set a 400,000-inode limit per shared account. An inode is any file or directory, so a site with heavy caching, lots of thumbnails, or a large mailbox can reach that cap before using much disk space. The terms also ban using more than 20% of server resources at a time, restrict file archives, mirror sites, and upload sites, and allow a $0.15-per-GB charge for unreasonable storage use.

In practice, unlimited means room to grow a normal website. It does not mean unlimited computing power or a cheap file archive.

WordPress Experience on InterServer

WordPress runs on InterServer’s standard shared platform through one-click application installation, and the stack listed on the technical details page (LiteSpeed, SSD caching, CloudLinux, and Cloudflare integration) is a good foundation for it. Our 9ms P95 under 50 concurrent users suggests that cached WordPress-style traffic is handled very well.

InterServer also sells a separate WordPress VPS starting at $3/mo with 1 CPU core, 2GB RAM, 40GB SSD storage, and 2TB transfer. Staff preconfigure it with OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP, LSCache, and OPcache, and you get root access with room to add resources. It is an attractive option for developers who want a tuned WordPress server for very little money.

There are two caveats. First, a preconfigured WordPress VPS is not the same as managed WordPress hosting. You are still responsible for plugin updates, store problems, and application maintenance unless you are on a plan with managed support (8 slices or more). Second, one official package page lists an $8/mo WordPress product with 25GB storage and one website, which conflicts with the newer shared hosting pages. Confirm it is still current before choosing it.

WooCommerce on InterServer

For WooCommerce, pick your tier based on how dynamic the store is. Product search, cart, checkout, logged-in customers, and payment integrations cannot use full-page caching, so they lean on CPU and memory. A small catalog with modest traffic will be fine on shared hosting. A busier store should start on Boost or a managed VPS.

Backups for WordPress sites

  • Standard shared hosting: weekly offsite JetBackup backups
  • Boost: daily backups available as a paid add-on
  • VPS: snapshots, commonly at 24, 48, and 72 hours, depending on node space
  • Dedicated servers: no provider-managed backups by default
  • Storage VPS: storage only, no backup service

Weekly backups are thin for an active WordPress site. If you publish often or run a store, add a plugin-based backup to off-site storage.

💡

My WordPress Setup Tip

If you start on InterServer shared hosting, install LiteSpeed Cache, connect Cloudflare, and add a daily off-site backup plugin on day one. Then use the 30-day refund window to load-test your own site, including checkout and logged-in pages, before committing long term.

Security and migration

Shared hosting includes InterShield, which blocks attacks and scans for malicious content. InterServer also offers Inter-Insurance, a service that helps clean, restore, and harden compromised accounts, including problems discovered during a migration. These help, but no host can make a site immune to compromise, so keep plugins updated.

Free migration covers files and databases, cPanel-to-cPanel email moves, and DNS guidance, with a typical 24 to 48 hour turnaround. InterServer makes strong zero-downtime claims; treat those as marketing until you see your own move complete. For a complex site, confirm mailbox compatibility and who handles the final DNS change.

InterServer Support Quality

InterServer advertises 24/7 support through phone, live chat, and tickets. Phone support is becoming rare at this price point, so that is a real plus for less technical owners.

We have not yet published a timed support test for InterServer, so I cannot give you measured response or resolution times. What I can share is customer sentiment: on October 5, 2026, InterServer’s Trustpilot profile showed 4.3 out of 5 from roughly 2,515 reviews. Recent reviews praise helpful technical staff and good value, while complaints mention provisioning delays, technical problems, and slow replies at times.

Support scope also depends on the product. Shared and Boost customers get a managed platform. VPS customers only get managed help (services, databases, control panels, uptime issues, and common server problems) from 8 slices upward. Below that, you are the server administrator.

ℹ️

Support Verdict

Support is broad on paper, with 24/7 phone, chat, and tickets, and customer reviews are mostly positive. It scores 8.8/10 rather than higher because we have not timed it ourselves and because unmanaged VPS plans leave server problems to you.

InterServer vs SiteGround vs Hostinger

Here is how InterServer compared with two popular shared hosts in our own tests. Where we did not run a given test for a provider, the table says so.

Our overall score9.1/109.4/109.2/10

On raw speed, InterServer won both head-to-head comparisons. SiteGround still scores higher overall because our rating weighs support, ease of use, and value alongside performance, and SiteGround’s custom tools and support are among the best for beginners. Hostinger edges InterServer on value and beginner friendliness, but trailed it badly on Speed Index in our test. Read our SiteGround review and Hostinger review for the full picture.

If speed per dollar is your priority and you are comfortable with DirectAdmin or cPanel, InterServer is the stronger choice of the three.

Ease of Use
8.5
  • Performance 9.5/10: 100% uptime over two weeks, a 0.395s Speed Index, and a 9ms P95 with zero failures under 50 users. It is not higher only because our monitoring window was short.
  • Support 8.8/10: 24/7 phone, chat, and tickets, plus a 4.3/5 Trustpilot score, but we have not timed it, and unmanaged VPS plans leave admin work to you.
  • Value 9.5/10: the $5/mo Price Lock and $3 VPS slices are excellent value. Standard renewals at $7 to $8/mo pull it down slightly.
  • Features 9.2/10: LiteSpeed, CloudLinux, Cloudflare, weekly offsite backups, free migration, SitePad, and a full upgrade path. Inode limits and weekly-only backups on shared are the gaps.
  • Ease of use 8.5/10: DirectAdmin and cPanel are familiar, but conflicting official pages make choosing the right plan harder than it should be.

Who Should Use InterServer?

InterServer is a good fit for:

  • Small business and blog owners who want speed on a budget. Our tests put InterServer ahead of SiteGround and Hostinger on raw speed, and the Price Lock removes renewal surprises.
  • Developers who want cheap root access. A $3 Linux VPS or a $3 preconfigured WordPress VPS is hard to beat for staging sites, side projects, and custom stacks.
  • Agencies that want one provider for everything. Reseller plans, Boost, VPS, and dedicated servers let you place each client on the right tier without juggling hosts.

InterServer is not the best fit for:

  • Sites with mostly European or Asian visitors. InterServer’s published locations are all in the US. A host with servers in your region will deliver faster dynamic pages.
  • Complete beginners who want hands-off help. The plan choices and conflicting pages take some care, and cheap VPS plans are unmanaged. A host like SiteGround or Bluehost is simpler for first-timers.

Final Verdict: Is InterServer Worth It?

Yes, for the right buyer. InterServer delivered some of the best numbers we have recorded: 100% uptime over two weeks, a 0.395-second Speed Index, and a 9ms P95 response time with zero failures under 50 simultaneous users. Pair that with a $5/mo Price Lock and $3 VPS slices, and few hosts offer this much performance per dollar.

The trade-offs are real but manageable. Standard and cPanel plans renew at $7 and $8/mo, unlimited plans have firm inode and CPU limits, VPS plans come without refunds or management below 8 slices, and all published locations are in the US. Most of all, InterServer’s own pages disagree with each other, so confirm the plan, term, renewal price, and support scope at checkout.

✅

My Recommendation

For North American small business sites, blogs, and developer projects, InterServer is an easy recommendation. Choose the $5/mo Price Lock for shared hosting, use the 30-day refund window to test your own site, and move to Boost or a managed VPS (8 slices and up) when you outgrow it.

InterServer Review FAQ

Is InterServer a good web host?

✅

Yes, especially for speed per dollar

In our testing, InterServer recorded 100% uptime over two weeks, a 0.395s Speed Index, and a 9ms P95 response time under 50 concurrent users. Combined with $5/mo Price Lock hosting and $3 VPS slices, it is one of the best-value hosts we have tested for North American audiences.

Is InterServer really $5 a month for life?

⚠️

Only through the Price Lock campaign

The $5/mo for life rate applies to eligible accounts ordered through InterServer’s Price Lock campaign and stays fixed while you remain on that plan. Standard and cPanel plans bought at $2.50/mo renew at $7/mo and $8/mo. Domains, add-ons, and taxes are extra, so confirm the terms at checkout.

Does InterServer have a money-back guarantee?

ℹ️

30 days on eligible shared plans

Standard, Windows, Boost, and WordPress hosting packages have a 30-day refund period. VPS, dedicated servers, licenses, colocation, and IP transit are not refundable once service starts. Cancel at least three days before renewal to avoid being billed for another term.

Is InterServer VPS managed?

ℹ️

Only at 8 slices or more

InterServer includes managed support on Linux VPS plans with 8 or more slices, starting at $24/mo. Smaller VPS plans are effectively unmanaged, so you handle server administration yourself. Control panel licenses such as cPanel cost extra.

Where are InterServer’s data centers?

ℹ️

US only

InterServer’s published VPS locations are the NYC metro area (including Secaucus, New Jersey), Dallas, and Los Angeles. Cloudflare integration can speed up cached content worldwide, but dynamic requests still go back to a US server.

Is InterServer’s unlimited hosting really unlimited?

⚠️

No, fair-use limits apply

Shared accounts are limited to 400,000 inodes and may not use more than 20% of server resources at a time. File archives, mirror sites, and upload sites are restricted, and InterServer can charge $0.15 per GB for unreasonable storage use.
